Electrocardiogram (ECG) – Heart Health Monitoring

An Electrocardiogram (ECG or EKG) is a non-invasive test that records the electrical activity of the heart. It is used to detect abnormal heart rhythms, identify signs of heart disease such as coronary artery disease, and monitor heart health after a heart attack. It also helps evaluate the effectiveness of medications and pacemakers. Regular ECG tests are essential, especially for individuals with diabetes, high blood pressure, or a history of heart disease, as they help in the early detection of heart-related complications.

There are different types of ECG tests depending on the medical requirement. A Resting ECG is performed while the patient is at rest and helps detect underlying heart conditions. A Stress ECG or treadmill test is conducted while the patient exercises to evaluate heart function under stress. Holter Monitoring involves continuous ECG recording for 24 to 48 hours to detect irregular heartbeats over time.

The procedure for an ECG is simple and painless. Small electrode patches are placed on the chest, arms, and legs to record the heart’s electrical activity. The test usually takes about 5 to 10 minutes and provides valuable insights into heart health.

Who should get an ECG? People experiencing symptoms like chest pain, palpitations, dizziness, or shortness of breath should consider an ECG test. It is also recommended for those with high blood pressure, diabetes, or a history of heart disease. Regular ECG screenings help in early diagnosis and timely medical intervention.

ECG and Diabetes: Diabetes significantly increases the risk of heart disease, making ECG tests crucial for monitoring heart health. High blood sugar levels can affect the heart over time, leading to complications like irregular heartbeats, heart attacks, or strokes. By including ECG as part of routine health check-ups, individuals with diabetes can take preventive measures to maintain overall heart health.
